And a big part of that comes down to ensuring equality is observed across all their departments.To help you see exactly what’s covered, here’s everything you need to know about the Equality Act â€" and what it means when it comes to your career:What is The Equality Act 2010? The Equality Act, set out in 2010, is a piece of legislation that aims to protect all individuals from discrimination, harassment and victimisation in the workplace â€" as well as their lives in general.Covered as part of the act are various protected characteristics ranging from age and religion, through to gender, sexual orientation and disabilities.What are protected characteristics?There are nine main areas which the Equality Act covers â€" known as ‘protected characteristics’.These include:AgeSexSexual orientationGender rea ssignmentRaceReligionMarriage and civil partnershipPregnancy and maternityDisability1. Age Ageism in the workplace can come in many forms. The Equality Act makes it unlawful for employers to discriminate against any member of their workforce on the basis of their age.Examples of direct and indirect age discrimination:Treating someone differently based on their ageDismissing an older worker because of their agePaying a young worker below the national minimum wage2. SexSex or gender discrimination is protected under The Equality Act 2010 ensuring employees are covered against direct and indirect discrimination, victimisation and harassment in all circumstances.Examples of direct and indirect gender discrimination:Preventing promotion opportunities for workers based on genderBeing taken advantage of for raising a complaint in regards to sexual biasUnequal pay  3. Sexual OrientationAs a protected characteristic, a person’s sexual orientation is safeguarded by the act â€" whether they ’re bisexual, homosexual, heterosexual or otherwise.Examples of direct and indirect sexual orientation discrimination:Not hiring someone based on their sexual orientationTalking about a colleagues perceived sexual orientationRevealing an individual’s sexual orientation without their consent  4. Gender reassignmentAs part of the act, those who have had gender reassignment surgery (or are thinking about doing so) are protected from discrimination.The Equality Act 2010 does not include those who identify as transgender â€" although various changes have been proposed which would cover these individuals, meaning they could still be incorporated in the future.Examples of direct and indirect gender reassignment discrimination:Being treated differently due to absence before, during or after reassignmentNot receiving sick pay from an employer regarding complications after surgeryRidicule from colleagues regarding the gender reassignment procedure5. RaceRacial discrimination legislation o utlined in the Equality Act prevents companies from treating employees and jobseekers differently because of their racial or ethnic background.Examples of direct and indirect race discrimination:Racial slursCreating salary brackets based on ethnic backgroundNeglect from a superior in regards to your complaint of racial abuse6. Religion A person’s religious beliefs are also covered by the act, meaning that employers are required to allow their employees to observe certain religious practices. Disability Under the Equality Act 2010, a disability is defined as a physical or mental impairment that has a substantial and long-term negative effect on your ability to carry out your daily activities.It’s unlawful for someone to treat an individual less favourably than another because of their disability and so, organisations must make reasonable adjustments to protect the wellbeing of their workers.Examples of direct and indirect disability discrimination:An employer refusing to enable wheelchair/lift accessNot providing employees with disabled parkingNot offering reasonable adjustments to equipment, if required  How are you protected by the Equality Act?If you feel you’ve been the victim of some form of discrimination at work, always speak to your employer first to resolve any issues.If the problem persists, then a claim can be taken to an employment tribunal, who will review your case(s) on an individual basis. However, it’s important to note that a fee will be incurred to file these claims.Additionally, it’s important to note that there are limited exceptions for all protected characteristics that could allow for certain behaviours to be deemed acceptable in the workplace. Go through a big experience, have a quick Google, and you’ll find an easy-to-share meme detailing exactly how you’re feeling with razor-sharp humour in a matter of seconds. They’re insanely popular precisely because of this accuracy and accessibility. The comfort of memes There’s something comforting about sharing your joys â€" and struggles â€" with people who’ll also identify with them, who’ll understand your pain or happiness and help you laugh about it at the same time. A problem shared is a problem halved, remember, and memes let you share on a massive scale. The current response to Trump’s shock presidential victory this week is a perfect illustration of how we all seek solace online and use shareable content â€" like memes or tweets â€" to voice our opinions and connect with likeminded individuals. From the instant the results were announced, the world set about creating memes to show its anger and shock at Clinton’s loss. But providing encouraging political and social commentary isn’t the only positive way we use memes. The power of before and after photos Instagram fitness models and health pages â€" like Joe Wicks’ Body Coach, for example â€" regularly post before and after pictures of men and women who’ve transformed their bodies with diet or exercise. They’re common motivational tools for people looking to lose weight or start working out, and the more extreme the better. It’s the same with pages designed to support individuals undertaking cosmetic surgery, with before and after memes of successful rhinoplasties or breast augmentation procedures regularly receiving thousands of likes. On these accounts and in these memes, followers find advice, support, encouragement and motivation to help them change their appearances â€" and lives. Unfortunately, there’s also a much darker side to this trend. The potential for body-shaming Even when they’re created with the best intentions in mind, there’s no guarantee they’ll continue to be used in a constructive manner. They often end up becoming a source of ridicule, a tool for publicly body-shaming and objectifying people â€" particularly young women. It doesn’t take much hunting around the internet to find hundreds of memes dedicated solely to brutally tearing apart Kylie Jenner and her infamous lip fillers. More recently, Taylor Swift has been a victim of vicious before and after memes speculating about whether she’s had a boob job. The virality of cruelty These cruel memes quickly go viral â€" often without the subject’s approval. And although those starring celebrities are more popular, regular individuals are sometimes caught up in similar situations, especially since photos posted online can be easily taken without permission. What starts out as a funny joke to the people making and sharing them can, in the space of a few hours, become a nightmare for the unwilling subjects. Take Maggie Goldenberger, the 23-year-old American whose goofy childhood photo was dragged out of the depths of the internet and turned into the viral ‘ermahgerd’ meme. Although she’s relatively at peace with her social media fame nowadays, she had no control over what happened to her. Earlier this year we saw a much more extreme example when Italian woman Tiziana Cantone committed suicide after her leaked sex tape was turned into a viral meme. Clearly more vigorous laws are needed to regulate online privacy. The millennial meme culture Nevertheless, it’s a tricky and sensitive debate. Yes, memes can be great, harmless fun in some cases, but they can also be used destructively. Altering our ignorant mind-set to this dark undercurrent of social media will be crucial going forwards, and since viral memes are so much a part of the millennial culture, bringing about change will be a slow process. Would You Marry Someone Who Was Unemployed According to a recent survey conducted by YourTango and ForbesWomen, 75 percent of women surveyed said they would not marry someone without a job and 65 percent said they wouldnt get married if they were the one who was unemployed. But 91 percent of single women said they would marry for love over money. Huh? Some of the other survey stats intrigued me as well including:55 percent of women would give up their careers to take care of children if their partners asked them to but only 28 percent would ask the same of their partner.77 percent of women believe they  can simultaneously have a fulfilling relationship and family life, as well as a successful career yet only 43 percent said their work/life balance is what they would like it to be.62 percent of women in a relationship said they only spend 3 waking hours with their partner during the work week.42 percent of women said that if they had an extra hour each day they would spend it alone rather than with their partners, friends, or family.Is it possible that women have been conditioned to want love over money, but the prospect of being with someone who is unemployed challenges a need for stability? Is there a biological predisposition for women to assume the man will be the primary breadwinner?And what about the work/life balance issue? Is it conceivable that women have been told for so long that they can have it all that they naturally believe this is so, even when their lives dont reflect any such work/life balance? Do woman want it all and then decide to chuck it once kids come into the picture and there is an opportunity to raise a family full-time?I dont have the answers to any of these questions, but I think the survey represents the state of flux, turmoil, and confusion that many women feel. We want it all, but having it all simultaneously seems to be mathematically impossible. Maybe there just arent enough hours in the day to have it all at the same time. Are there other options?
